YGC Distributes Over 1m Nets In Ekiti State.

 In an effort to roll back malaria in Nigeria, the Yakubu Gowon Centre,a principal recipient of the Global Fund(to fight AIDS, tuberclosis and malaria) distributed 1,002,120 free Long Lasting Insecticide-treated Nets(LLIN) to households in all the 16 LGAs in Ekiti state,Nigeria.

The campaign which lasted from 2nd Nov to 2nd Dec 2009 was aimed at increasing coverage and utilization of LLIN in Ekiti state in line with the goal of the new National Malaria Control Strategic Plan (NMSP) to address the reduction of malaria-related maternal and child mortality, with at least 50% reduction in malaria-related morbidity and mortality by 2013 along with reduction in the socio-economic impact of the disease in Nigeria.

 At the end of the exercise, 96% of housholds in Ekiti stae were registerd for net cards collection and ownership of at least one net increased from 23% before the campign to 95% in the state.
